Dear Friends,
As we embrace the season of thankfulness and giving, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for this incredible community. Your support empowers us to preserve, protect, and celebrate the cultural and natural heritage of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
This month, we also celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, honoring the rich culture, traditions, and achievements of Indigenous people across the United States. At SCCA, we are deeply committed to fostering awareness and appreciation for the vibrant cultural heritage of the region. From our Four Corners Indigenous Art Market to cultural demonstrations and educational programs, we remain inspired by the invaluable contributions of Native artists, storytellers, and knowledge keepers.
During this season of giving, I hope you’ll also consider supporting SCCA with these two important opportunities:
- Giving Tuesday on December 3rd, a global day dedicated to generosity.
- Colorado Gives Day on December 10th, with Early Giving already underway!
Every donation makes a direct impact on our efforts to preserve the cultural sites, traditions, and landscapes of the monument. In the spirit of giving, I invite you to contribute to our general fund to ensure we can continue our vital work.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Together, we are preserving the legacy of Canyons of the Ancients for generations to come.
With gratitude,

Markleigh Swanson Executive Director Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance
Note from the Board Chair
November 2024
With Thanksgiving in mind it seems appropriate to share some simple thoughts. Me? What am I thankful for?
I'm thankful that we in Southwest Colorado and all those who visit from nearby and abroad, have the Canyons on the Ancients National Monument to enjoy. I'm thankful that local individuals, agency representatives and elected officials had the insight to nominate and designate this monument back on June 9, 2000 for management of over 176,000 acres with the highest known archaeological site density in the United States. I am thankful that we all can explore the incredible resources that exist out there.
I'm also thankful to be able to serve on the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance board of directors, and to have others dedicated enough to give their time and serve on the board with me. I'm thankful for the volunteers for the Cultural Site Steward Program and other activities to help us to accomplish the tasks and activities. I'm thankful that we have a dedicated Executive Director, Site Steward Program Manager, and tour guides that do the real work to achieve our goals.
I'm thankful that we are establishing good relationships with members of some of the 26 traditionally associated Tribal and Pueblo members who are helping us to interpret the resources and educate the public.
Finally, I'm thankful for you, the members of Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance, whether you volunteer for us, visit the monument frequently, or perhaps have never visited it, but you believe in the value of protecting those sensitive resources. Thank you for your support and contributions to make our organization successful.
Best regards, Don Hoffheins Board Chair, Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance
