Rory Tyler: Moab's Ancient Astronomers

09/13/2023 04:00 PM - 05:00 PM MT

Description

Rory Tyler has been studying Moab's ancient Indian rock art for thirty years. Join us on September 13th at 4pm at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum as he talks about four sites in the Moab area that interact with Solstices and Equinoxes. Most of the art and structures that create these astronomical markers were created by the Basketmaker culture about 2,000 years ago. Some of it, created by the Archaic culture, is even older. Rather than simply marking the passage of time, much of the art seems to to tell a story who's meaning we can never know. These observations will enhance the viewers' understanding of the range of rock art, landscapes, and structures that the Ancients used to commemorate the motion of the heavens and humanity's place in the in the cosmos.
